A study of Maurice Barbanell and his central role in shaping twentieth-century spiritualism, media, and belief.

This book examines the life and influence of Maurice Barbanell, editor of Psychic News and one of the most prominent figures in modern British spiritualism. Drawing on archival research, it explores how Barbanell helped shape public understandings of mediumship, belief, and the spirit world. The project situates spiritualism within broader histories of media, print culture, and religious change, showing how ideas about the unseen circulated through newspapers, séances, and public debate. It also considers the tensions between belief and skepticism, and the role of archives in preserving these contested histories.
